This collection consists of an index of soldiers enlisted with the First Kentucky Brigade. This is an alphabetical index listing name, rank, company, location, home address, and Louisville address. There is an unexplained newsclipping pasted to the front inside cover of the index listing a number, name and location, or just location. An example being: "No. 34-Jos. E. Johnston, Dalton."

Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety. The First Kentucky Brigade was part of the Confederate Army. it became known as the Orphan Brigade after Union troops captured Fort Donelson (1862), leaving the brigade cut off from it's home state for the duration of the war. Despite this, the Orphan Brigade distinguished itself on and off the battlefield by maintaining high morale, discipline, and effective military tactics.
